This weekend, my parents, Brody and I went to visit my sister in San Diego. She just got a new apartment so I was excited to check it out. We hopped on the train and spent Saturday and Sunday visiting various parts of the city we hadn’t seen before. This iPhone photo blog reflects the gorgeous, historic Balboa Park.
I absolutely adore this place. It’s so rich with history and character. Brody loved the koi pond and checking out the caterpillars. He also had fun climbing the roots of a tree. I keep forgetting how much this kid loves nature. The park features activities specifically for kids, and I hope to bring Brody to one soon. I mean, there are only a few years where my little guy will hold my hand – I want to make them as fun as I can!
There is so much to see at Balboa Park. I hope we get the chance to visit on a Tuesday; that’s when we can visit some museums for free! There are over 15 museums to choose from, so there is no way we can do it all in one day. Plus, there are gardens, art, and various attractions to see. No wonder my sister moved to San Diego!

On Saturday, I posted this photo on my Instagram account, with the caption “Pop Quiz: Where are we?”. Surprisingly, not too many people knew the answer. If you are ever in the San Fernando Valley area, you should absolutely make time for a visit to Carney’s.
In our household, this restaurant is referred to as the “Hot Dog Train”. My son loves this place, so it is always a special treat when we take him. They are known for their hot dogs, but many other options on their menu as well. We always aim for an 11am lunch because once noon comes around, the place is packed!
My favorite thing about the San Fernando Valley is finding gems like this. Carney’s is located on one of the busiest streets, Ventura Boulevard, but still seems to be hidden to the masses. As a creature of routine, I tend to stick to our normal eateries, so when we find a place as special as Carney’s, we’re almost proud to imagine this to be our little secret, even though it isn’t – especially now that I’m blogging about it!
Luckily, you can’t miss it; After all, it is bright red and yellow train in the middle of the city.
After the rains and a few gloomy days, the sun came out from behind the clouds to make for a great morning in the San Fernando Valley. Seemed like the perfect opportunity to take our first family hike.
"What's a hike?" Brody asked. Any answer we gave him was not good enough.
We explored the Franklin Canyon trail today. This little adventure was perfect for Brody. A new place to run, throw, and learn. Now he knows what a hike is.
Check out my wondeful explorers. Another fun Saturday morning in the bag!
I feel like I am buying a new pair of shoes for my son every few weeks. Yes, it is normal, but it still surprises me every time he has grown out of a pair. However, this trip to Target was different. This little guy actually chose this pair.
In the past, Brody never cared about his shoes. He would just wear whatever I chose, with no opinion or discussion. On this particular search for his size 13s, we took my "better half", Patrick, with us. Patrick spotted these bright blue and neon green shoes the moment we stepped into the shoe department. I scoffed immediately and shook my head at him because I knew those shoes would not match with half of Brody's wardrobe. In my mind, it would be silly to buy them.
Well, of course, Brody chose them. With two against one, the brighter-than-life sneakers made it into the cart.
At least we thought they did.
Once we were at home, I realized Brody's brand new pair of shoes never even made it to check out. My poor little Brodster was so bummed. To make it up to him, I told him we would go back the next day and he would be allowed to pick a new book for bedtime. Problem solved (this kid is still easy sometimes)!
As if he did it on purpose, he chose the lesser-known Dr. Suess book, "Ten Apples Up On Top!" This book actually MATCHES his shoes!
I was so concerned with the shoes not matching anything. I guess he showed me, huh?
It has been a week now, and Brody is still very proud of his new kicks. I must confess: I actually like them now. They are so vibrant and fun. I love that they don't match his clothes. They are more "Brody-like" than any other shoes I've ever picked out for him.
Unfortuately, that means Patrick was right. Please don't tell him. ;)
On Saturday, my little family was given the chance to visit the new (to us) world of drag racing!
It is always refreshing to have new experience. We had so many questions and still had more on the way home. Everyone we came across was open to explaining the sport, which requires much much more than just having a driver's license. There is a skill that needs to be practiced and perfected, especially with so many variables that come into play.
There was a variety of booths and food stands, as well as classic cars to admire. We were fortunate enough to hang out with one of the pit crews for the day. What I loved most about the day was the family atmosphere. I like to think that when people gather with one common interest, they can't help but become instant friends.
Even though our car didn't win that day, we still had a fantastic time. With such a busy schedule, it is difficult to find time to try something new. Drag racing wasn't even on my radar of list of things to do! I'm glad went and totally regret the fact that I left my DSLR at home. My phone camera doesn't seem to give the colors of this car any justice!
