For next weekend’s Superhero 5K in San Diego, I have decided to dress as my childhood hero, SUPER GROVER!
I didn’t want to choose a relatively common hero because other participants could probably do it much better. Even though it’s not a costume competition, who would not want to stand out just a little?
Super Grover was my absolute favorite sketch on the PBS show, Sesame Street. This unlikely hero was so warm and endearing. Even though he screwed up (A LOT), he was always able to save the day. I even owned a plush version of the character, and now it lives in my son’s bedroom.
This quick sketch makes the outfit relatively easy. Luckily, this type of blue is very popular in active wear right now, so the top and bottoms should not be hard to find. I would just need to create the symbol for the chest. Super Grover used to tie a bed sheet around his neck as a cape (easy!), so that’s good to go too.
The real challenge is the headpiece. Super Grover used a knight’s helmet (WHAT?), so I need to figure out what will stay on my head, but still look resemble the character. Well, I’ve got a week so we’ll see what epiphany may come – IF one does arrive, haha!
Which fun runs have you done?
I draw, make, and occasionally tell a story.
