After the Brodster saw my recent throw pillow purchase, he asked how he could design his own. Since we already had all the couch cushions covered, I told him we could start with him illustrating his first fabric design to create a pillowcase for his bed. We went through a quick explanation on how the pattern process works (this is a great tutorial) and he immediately sat down to illustrate his first design. He drew it on paper and I taught him how to draw it digitally, mainly to make the colors print brighter on fabric. Somebody is obsessed with Captain Underpants! Naturally, we went with Spoonflower to create the fabric with Brody's drawings, ordering one yard of the brick pattern of the Kona Cotton fabric. Since I grew up in a home where sewing was a hobby, I was able to whip up a pillowcase in 15 minutes. For newbies, I highly suggest the tutorial by Make It & Love It because it was the closest to what I remember learning from my aunt. You should have seen Brody's eyes light up when he saw the fabric arrive in the mail! You guys, it was better than Christmas. There is nothing like watching a child discover what they can accomplish. He's sleeping on his new pillow right now and I can't wait to help him make more. I will, however, need to add an art app on his iPad because he is already asking to borrow mine for more designs. #artsyfamilyproblems
